What's the Point?
If a community or society is going to chart a course toward environmental, social and economic sustainability, the number of individuals living in that community/society must be taken into consideration.
How We'll Explore It
The question “Why isn’t population growth included in sustainability discussions” will open an
exploration of sustainability, including a brief history of sustainability and my own experience in trying to
introduce population growth into sustainability discourse. We will visit several Earth Day events to get
comments and insights from those working in the sustainability field. We will talk with professionals
currently working in population studies to get their take on the impacts of population growth, both
positive and negative. Finally, we will get some “person on the street” comments on population growth.
From this varied set of comments, we will set the stage for the current American view of population
growth as an issue.
